Montgomery police have arrested Roderious Antoine Dortch, 37, in connection with the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Damorrea Dill-Driver outside a hotel on Carmichael Road.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 23, 2025, at approximately 12:37 a.m. in the 5000 block of Carmichael Road. Dortch has been charged with capital murder and was taken into custody on August 26, following a three-day investigation by Montgomery law enforcement.
He’s currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility without bond, as is standard procedure in capital murder cases.
Court documents obtained from the investigation disclose that Dortch allegedly used a .223 caliber rifle during the shooting. Investigators have determined that the shots were fired from a vehicle, though authorities haven’t yet shared what led to the violent confrontation between the suspect and the victim.
The specific circumstances surrounding the shooting and any potential relationship between Dortch and Dill-Driver remain under investigation.
This fatal shooting marks Montgomery’s 43rd homicide of 2025, continuing a concerning trend of violent crimes in the area. The incident has drawn attention from local community leaders and law enforcement officials who are working to address the rising number of homicides in the city.
As the case moves forward, prosecutors will follow established protocols for capital murder cases, which carry the most severe penalties under Alabama law. Capital murder charges in Alabama can result in either life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if the defendant is convicted.
The Montgomery Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division continues to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses. They’re asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
The case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete.
The area where the shooting occurred, a busy section of Carmichael Road known for its hotels and businesses, has been the focus of increased police patrols since the incident. Local business owners and residents have expressed concerns about safety in the area, leading to discussions about additional security measures.
Dortch will face preliminary hearings in the coming weeks, where prosecutors will present initial evidence to establish probable cause for the capital murder charge. The date for these proceedings hasn’t yet been announced by the Montgomery County Court.
